Drilling  A Well

The Seven Steps to Drilling a Well

The iconic sight of oil and gas derrick is unmistakable. However, the actual task of drilling a well
involves much more than what meets the eye. This process is usually broken down into seven steps:

  • 1.Preparation

The site is leveled or excavated as needed.

  • 2.Deployment

Drilling, substructure, and auxiliary equipment is brought in and drilling begins.

  • 3.Logging

Geological data of the drill site is recorded and a concrete casing is placed in the hole.

  • 4.Perforation

The casing wall and concrete behind it are pierced to provide openings for fluids to enter the wellbore.

  • 5.Fracturing

A mixture of pressurized water, sand, and chemicals are forced through the perforations to split the rock and improve productivity.

  • 6.Pumping

A pump unit is placed at the surface location.

  • 7.Metering

A master meter station is built in a central location to monitor production from several wells and transport the oil or gas through a pipeline
